Vintage Japanese Jizo Stone Sculpture

This stone sculpture is Japanese in origin and depicts Jizo, also called O-Jizo-san or O-Jizo-sama, the guardian deity of children and travelers. Widely utilized at Buddhist temples, roadsides, and graveyards, the Jizo acts as a guardian spirit to children who have passed away before their parents, hiding these children in his clothing to protect them from devils and evil spirits, as depicted here. This smiling figure has accrued a rich patina due to its vintage age, and offers an authentic piece of cultural décor to the reverent home.
