ALFRED TIBOR Gold Plated Bronze Girl with Black Hair

Gold plated bronze sculpture by Alfred Tibor has a smooth, slender form with alluring contours as a dress hugs the woman’s curves and descends to the floor. Black hair is flecked with gold with stippled texture. A black marble base on wood has an organic shape. Signed by artist, dated 1986.

About the Artist:
Alfred Tibor (1920-2017) was a Hungarian sculptor born Alfred Goldstein. Tibor had a determined history of fighting the odds, and battling oppression for his Jewish faith. He was denied formal gymnastics training, but taught himself and qualified for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. He was denied because he was Jewish. Shortly after, in 1940, Tibor was forced to be a slave laborer in a Hungarian Army labor batallion. While in this position, he was captured by the Soviet Army and was a prisoner in a Siberian prison camp for six years. He was one of two survivors out of the 273 other slave laborers. Once he was freed in 1947, only he and his brother Andre survived out of his 82 relatives, between the war and the Holocaust. At this point, he and his brother changed their last name to Tibor to honor their brother Tibor Goldstein who had been executed in a different prison camp. Tibor credited his survival to “luck and determination”. Tibor went to Budapest and worked as a government exhibition designer. Two months after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, he escaped further persecution by emigrating to the United States. He worked as a commercial artist in Miami, Florida for 16 years before moving to Columbus, Ohio to sculpt full time. Alfred Tibor believed that he kept his life during those tumultuous years of persecution so he could eventually accept his calling of creating art and capture human emotion. His works are a part of almost 500 private collections and museums around the world.
