Vintage CURTIS JERÉ Metal Wall Sculpture
Fabricated out of undulating ribbons of multi-tone metals, this sculpture hangs neatly on a wall and adds postmodern aesthetic to the art collection. Founded in 1963 by Curtis Freiler (1910-2013) and Jerry Fels (1917-2007) under the nom de plume “Curtis Jeré”, the goal of this metalworking company was to provide gallery quality art to a mass audience. Sold and resold over the years, the company still produces sculptures and recently began reintroducing popular mid-century modern designs from past catalogs. This sculpture is signed and dated “C. Jeré 1992” en verso on the sculpture by the artists.

Large ceramic sculpture by Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante (1947-) depicts a triad of penguins emerging from a large egg. A charming work full of whimsy and humor ever prevalent in Bustamante’s repertoire, this sculpture is housed in a display box with a mirrored bottom pane and displays Bustamante’s signature prevalently on the side of the sculpture. It appears the beak on the top penguin has been repaired from the previous owner.

CURTIS JERÉ Large Pom Pom Sculpture
This sculpture by the makers at Curtis Jeré is fabricated from brass and consists of sea urchin-like pom poms of various sizes zig-zagging through space, connected to one another via brass rods. Wall mounted, this sculpture’s patinated brass construction provides a beautiful, industrial contrast to the typical organic subject matter present in many Curtis Jeré works. A perfect addition to the beginning or well-traveled art collection, this sizable sculpture is unsigned by the artists.
About the Artist:
Curtis Jeré is a compound nom de plume of Jerry Fels and Curtis Freiler, two brother-in-laws. They were metalworking artists who focused on home accessories and wall sculptures. The works of Curtis Jeré were produced and marketed by Artisan House, an art production for the average consumer that was founded by the duo in 1963. Freiler was the chief of production and Fels was the chief of design. They employed a great number of minorities and handicapped people and at one point employed 300 people. They sold the company in 1972. Early Curtis Jeré works were produced in California, but continue to be made overseas since the company’s outsourcing in 2003. Freiler passed away in 2008, Fels in 2013 at 103 years old.

Original bronze sculpture by American painter, printmaker, and sculptor Irving Amen (1918-2011) depicts a mother cradling a swaddled child in a Cubist styling. Amen, a gifted and multifaceted artist, began drawing at the age of four years old and led a varied career of exhibitions, commissions, and teaching appointments throughout his life, including posts at The University of Notre Dame and the Pratt Institute and murals in the United States and Belgium. Freestanding on a squared base, this original bronze displays a hearty, dark patina and is signed in the casting by the artist on the reverse side of the sculpture.
