SMOKY BROWN(1919-2005) Original Self-Portrait on Found Board – Signed

SOLD

Self portrait of Ohio artist and local legend Smoky Brown captures his essence with a found board, complete with mounted paintbrush. A muted palette creates the visage of the artist with loose brush strokes and his classic folksy style. The white paint brush mounted to his hand is a nod to his affinity for using reclaimed and repurposed materials. Signed, and therefore titled, at the top of the piece in blue.
About the Artist:
Smoky Brown (1919-2005) was an enigmatic folk artist from Dayton, Ohio who valued art and service to his Columbus community. Larger than life, Smoky was a storyteller and wove his stories into his paintings. Smoky Brown created art because he enjoyed it, and did not pursue a larger platform past his regional recognition. He regularly played with materials and methodology due to necessity, but his inventiveness only fueled his process and drive.

ERTE “Baroness” Bronze Sculpture on Marble Base

$3,500.00
After a long and successful career as a graphic artist and fashion designer, Erté revived his talents as a sculptor to create bronzes in his signature style at 75 years old. The “Baroness” wears a long gown with a tall standing collar, flared black gloves, and a pixie haircut. She stands on rounded green marble base with mounted brass nameplate. About the Artist: Erté (1892-1990) was born Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Russia to an admiral father amongst the social elite. He grew up surrounded by the elegant women of his mother’s social circle, fascinated by their fashion and exotic souvenirs of his father’s travels. He left Russia at 19 and head to Paris to begin his fashion career under the pseudonym Erté, a play on his initials. He designed costumed and designed fashions for renowned actresses and stage productions. In 1915, he began his 20 year partnership with Harper’s Bazaar which cemented his reputation as the Father of Art Deco. NICODEMUS POTTERY Bull Circa 1970

$595.00
Circa 1970, this bull sculpture by Nicodemus Pottery has a rusty brown glaze with a high gloss finish. The thick bull bears his short horns with head down, with his tail whimsically twisted. About the Artist: Chester Nicodemus (1901-1990) was a Columbus, Ohio potter, sculptor, and teacher known for his small clay birds, as well as other wildlife, teapots and pitchers. Nicodemus earned a degree from Cleveland Art School and then went on to teach at Dayton Art School and Wittenberg college. In 1932, he became dean  at the Columbus College of Art and Design and later taught at Ohio State University and served as president of the Columbus Art League.
